“Can you tell me where we’re going to?” I took an emotional intelligence course last year in my doctoral program and conducted a self-assessment analysis. In the process, I had to develop a learning plan basically forecasting or laying out the goals I was looking to accomplish personally and professionally over the next 15 years.
I put a good bit of thought into it, placed it on my wall to see it every day, and reminded myself this is in the distance. “Was the truth really there or was it right under my hair?” From my prior blogs I provide historical contexts to my profession, school, and latest ventures in my startup Fractional CFO consultancy. Doing my own thing was something that I saw in the distance but when I caught the stray from the USAID closure, I looked back at the learning plan and thought, forget the distance, might as well get to it now. “Nothing comes from dreamers but dreams”.

“Nothing comes from talkers but sound”, so I got to it. Applying for a slew of jobs that got my interest and began setting up shop for my business. Probably by the 100th something application I decided to apply for this adjunct international business position. By this time, I became a little null to receive responses from applications and what I was “looking for still wasn’t found”. However, I was gaining progressive traction with my business and solidifying fruitful leads each week. That balanced me out a good bit, the duality of life I suppose 🤷🏽.
Before I knew it, I landed an interview with the University I applied to teach international business, went through the process, and landed the opportunity! Hooray, right, grateful, of course, but it didn’t hit me because my mind was still in go mode in landing that next big gig, contract, or client. I kicked idling out of my boat a long time ago and was full steam ahead on any and everything. Until…….
I saw Instructor: Steven Lucas International Business. It hit me, a full circle moment.

What I thought I would be doing 5-8 years in the future, I’m actually doing it now. The opportunity to still partake in international business conversations, be a contributor to the industry, and teaching the next generation I’m in the process of doing it now. This role gives me the chance to still be active in my consultancy and the two might compliment each other in some facet as time goes on. We’ll see👀 !
“We can talk all we want to, but the world still goes around and round”
It's funny how things can turn around if you just keep pressing forward, making the best with the resources available, and giving things your best shot. Who knows, maybe what I’m looking for still isn’t found, but what if it is and it’s a perfect fit? What do you think?
This blog post was inspired by Prince and Tevin Campbell’s Round and Round. Full circle moments don’t happen too often for some, but when they do, it hits a little different each time. “ Ooh, we can talk all we want to, but the world still goes around and round”.
